Vietnam in Transition, 1976 – Present. The exhibition explored the multi-layered intersections of art, history, and memory of Vietnam since the end of the Vietnam War and the national reunification. The exhibition comprised of contemporary artwork reflecting on various aspects of Vietnamese postwar history interspersed with historical artifacts and documents from everyday life. Photographs from Les Bird’s second book, ‘Along the Southern Boundary: A Marine Police Officer’s Frontline Account of the Vietnamese Boatpeople and their Arrival in Hong Kong’ formed part of this six-month-long exhibition. A total of seventeen artists' and photographers' works were on display between April and September 2023. On the opening day of the exhibition, Les gave a talk and presentation of his photographs at the Wende to a full house. He was joined for the talk by a number of former Vietnamese refugees that he had first met during South China Sea rescue missions some 40 years before.
Chinese University exhibition - 'Nang Tu Do'.
The Archive of Art in the Camps and the Traces of Vietnamese Boatpeople in Hong Kong.
Photo Exhibition: Oct 2020 - April 2021
The exhibition comprises of artwork produced by Vietnamese boat people that were in the camps in Hong Kong in the 1980s. The art has been collated by artist Evelyna Liang Kan who, throughout the 1980s, taught art to the Vietnamese in the camps. In order to visually explain the boat people's journey, I was invited by Evelyna to display 30 photographs, taken during the same era, at the exhibition. The Chinese University exhibition was held in the university’s Main Library and ran between October 2020 and April 2021.
