Title: Royal Geographical Society Field Trip to Tai O
Led my first Royal Geographical Society field trip just recently to the historic fishing village of Tai O and the former Tai O Police Station, which is now the Tai O Heritage Hotel. 32 Society members and their guests came along for the day out.
I was the police inspector for almost two years at Tai O back in the late 1970s. The village, most of which comprises of ‘stilt houses’ that line both sides of Tai O Creek, hasn’t changed much since the time I lived and worked there.
The police station (now a hotel) too still looks as it did back then. Actually, the lease holder/owners, Sino Heritage Group, have done a magnificent job renovating the building, which was built in 1902 as an anti-piracy station. It was good to see that some of the original features of the station have been retained, such as the heavy metal window shutters that could be closed should the station come under attack. The louvered doors, brass fitting and decorative fireplaces in each room also give the place a living link to the building’s 122 years colourful history. My thanks to the Tai O Heritage Hotel’s general manager, Karl Law, for allowing our group access to the hotel and the grounds.
